Turkish president calling for full ban of Böhmermann’s satirical poem
Turkish president Erdogan’s lawyer, Cologne-based Mustafa Kaplan has filed an appeal against the ruling by the Regional Court of Hamburg. As is well-known, the Hamburg court had declared the poem, with the exception of its last six lines, unacceptable. In his petition to the court, Erdogan’s lawyer accuses Böhmermann of racism, which he claims had been directed against the entire Turkish nation. President Erdogan wants a ban of the entire poem.
The dark shadow of Srebrenica
In recent days the media in Bosnia and Herzegovina has focused on a proposed amendment to the Criminal Code that would introduce a prison sentence of five to ten years for denial of the genocide at Srebrenica. Even though the bloodiest event in the civil wars in the Balkans is recognized by the international community as genocide, Bosnian Serbs insistently reject that definition. The proposed amendment would also prescribe punishment for crimes committed in the media (hate speech, incitement to hatred).
Towards the curbing of online hate speech
Approximately one year ago, the Big 4 online firms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft) decided to take a stand against online hate speech by developing standardized terms of use. Report on the press in Romania
Produced by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Press Freedom with support from the European Union, the report Media Pluralism Risks in and outside the European Union (MPM) was published in Romania in the middle of May 2017. A standard questionnaire was used to collect the research data between May and October 2016. The most significant finding of the survey is that the press in Romania fails to fulfill its fundamental social role of providing fair and accurate information.
Internet Institute to be set up in Berlin
